Signs of life-threatening emergencies

Two of the most common life-threatening conditions are heart attacks and strokes. In both cases, time is crucial. Recognizing the signs of a heart attack and the signs of a stroke can help save your life or the life of someone you love.

In general, signs that you need emergency care include:

  • Bleeding that cannot be stopped
  • Blood in the urine or bloody diarrhea
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing or vomiting blood
  • Fainting or dizziness
  • Fractures
  • Intense abdominal pain
  • Severe sprains or dislocations
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

If you see these symptoms in yourself or someone else, call 911.

Trauma center

We have a Level III trauma center. The Level III designation, as verified by the American College of Surgeons, means our hospital is equipped to provide prompt emergency trauma services. This includes stabilization, resuscitation, advanced surgery and intensive care for traumatic injuries.

A traumatic injury is an injury with the potential to cause long-term disability or death. If you have experienced this type of injury or any other medical emergency, call 911. A paramedic will provide an initial assessment and decide if you need trauma care.

Observation unit

When ER doctors determine a patient is unfit to return home but does not need to be admitted to the hospital, they can place that patient in an “observation status" in our 11-bed observation unit. After further testing, the patient may be admitted or discharged home. This process helps ensure all patients receive the level of care they need.
