GI cancer diagnosis
Gastrointestinal cancers are usually slow growing and hard to find. Most patients with GI cancer do not have symptoms in the early stages. However, you should keep your eye out for symptoms such as:
- Poor appetite
- Losing weight without trying
- A sense of fullness just below your chest after eating
- Abdominal pain
- Heartburn or indigestion
- Nausea
- Swelling or fluid build-up in the abdomen
- Vomiting, with or without blood
It is possible these symptoms are indicative of something else, so it is important to discuss them with your doctor and have a medical examination to rule out cancer or another condition. Your doctor may use various imaging tests and diagnostic procedures to provide an accurate diagnosis:
- Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
- Upper endoscopy
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography
- Biopsy
- Upper GI series
- Computed tomography (CT) scan
- Digital rectal scan
- Blood test
GI cancer treatments
Our surgical oncologists have specialized knowledge of rare, unusual and complex cancer types and treat a high volume of patients with these diseases. They also have the ability to more precisely treat the tumor and lessen side effects of treatment. They can do this by using intensity-modulated radiation therapy and the only robotic radiosurgery system in the Greater Nashville area.
Additionally, interventional radiologists specialize in cutting-edge radioembolization treatments (selective internal radiation therapy), chemoembolization and radiofrequency ablation.
